WASHINGTON (AP) Walt Disney Co. said Monday it will pay $10 million for a walmart Christmas decorations display at its namesake store in Florida that will replace Christmas decorations for nearly 200 of its stores.
The move to replace Christmas decor for more than 400 stores across the country follows an announcement by Walt Disney World Resort earlier this year that it would stop offering Christmas decorations.
The Walt Disney Company says it will replace decorations with new holiday-themed items and the company says it expects to start replacing Christmas decorations at its theme parks and theme resorts this year.
Disney said the new display will feature more than 1,500 different Christmas tree shapes and decorations, including many that were added to Walt Disney Imagineering’s “Walt Disney World Holiday Season” campaign.
The announcement came in a blog post by Walt Christmas, a Walt Disney company vice president of corporate communications.
The new display is set to open in 2017.
It is the first new Christmas decorations since the 2016 holiday season and comes as the company grapples with a string of major incidents and incidents involving safety, including an attack on a California-based Christmas tree seller, the shooting of two employees at its California theme park and the death of a California woman who was beaten by an employee.
The company says its safety measures will continue.
